What Are Solvent Dyes?

Solvent dyes are non-polar organic colorants that dissolve completely in organic solvents, including aromatic solvents such as toluene and xylene, aliphatic media such as mineral spirits and petroleum distillates, selected alcohols and thermoplastic polymer melts. Unlike pigments, which remain as insoluble particles, solvent dyes integrate at the molecular level and produce transparent colour without solid residue, haze or particulate matter.

Solvent dyes are not acid dyes and are not basic dyes. Acid and basic dyes are water-soluble ionic colorants used primarily for textile fibres. Solvent dyes are strictly non-aqueous and hydrophobic: they dissolve in organic solvents, hydrocarbon fluids and polymer matrices rather than in water. This distinction makes them suited to petroleum products and optically transparent plastics.
